Heckerling’s witty spin on Austen’s “Emma” (a novel about the perils of match-making and injecting yourself into situations in which you don’t belong) has remained a perennial favorite not only because it’s a sensible freshening over a classic tale, but because it allows for thus much more past the Austen-issued drama.
“Ratcatcher” centers around a twelve-year-aged boy living while in the harsh slums of Glasgow, a location frighteningly rendered by Ramsay’s stunning images that drive your eyes to stare long and hard within the realities of poverty. This isn’t considered one of those maddening horror movies in which the characters make needlessly dumb choices to put themselves additional in harm’s way.
Side-eyed for years before the film’s beguiling power began to more fully reveal itself (Kubrick’s swansong proving being every inch as mysterious and rich with meaning as “The Shining” or “2001: A Space Odyssey”), “Eyes Wide Shut” is a clenched sleepwalk through a swirl of overlapping dreamstates.

“The Truman Show” is definitely the rare high concept movie that executes its eye-catching premise to absolute perfection.
